Creative Play
Why Creative Play is Good for Your Child
Play that involves making things, such as painting, playdough and cooking, is a great favourite with toddlers. Your child will feel very satisfied when he has created something, as it is a wonderful way to express himself. Creative play helps your child to develop fine motor skills such as holding a pencil, becoming more accurate with marks on paper, and eventually drawing recognizable objects and writing. It is good for your child to learn about textures, solids and liquids through having fun experimenting with different playthings. Playing with crayons, paints, playdough, water or sand is messy, but you need to let him have this sort of play, as he will benefit hugely from it. Creative play also relieves boredom and immediately inspires a child to get stuck into something new. If your child is tired in the afternoon, itâs often worth getting out the paints or playdough to lift his spirits, and you will often have a happy child until teatime.
Remember that when your child has made something, however wonky you think it looks, it is usually very special to her, so make sure it doesnât get put in the bin by mistake. Our children used to keep their homemade things for ages and have special places to keep them. Many parents stick their childâs paintings on the fridge or kitchen cupboards, and this is a nice way to display them. If your toddler is a particularly prolific artist then you could try putting a date on a few creations from each month and keeping them in a special box for her to look at when sheâs older.
